IN LSAMP Video Won Experts’ Choice Award in the NSF 2020 STEM DIVE Challenge

Categories: Competition

Date: 9/23/2024

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is looking for innovative, effective, and replicable approaches to building a diverse and inclusive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce through partnerships. As an NSF initiative with a mission to enhance U.S. leadership in STEM by facilitating partnerships, NSF INCLUDES is sponsoring the NSF STEM DIVE (Diversity and Inclusion Video Exhibition) Challenge.

Dr. Patti Lang, Co-PI and Campus Director of the Indiana STEM LSAMP (IN LSAMP) at Ball State University (BSU), won one of the four Experts’ Choice Awards for her video entry, Scientific Journal or Graphic Novel? A Student-Production Featuring LSAMP Research! The Experts’ Choice awards are given for the most compelling videos describing partnerships that contribute to an increase in diversity and inclusion in STEM. There are four categories of the Experts’ Choice Awards: STEM Alliances, Informal STEM Education, PreK-12 STEM Education, and STEM Higher Education. BSU video won the Experts’ Choice Award for the STEM Alliances category.

The video looked at how IN LSAMP students at BSU collaborated with graphic art management students to showcase their research in a novel fashion. The project was funded by IN STEM LSAMP, NSF-HRD, 1618-408 and BSU Sponsored Projects Administration. View the video online: https://youtu.be/UPNfL9moJvY. The video is a product of the partnership between the two Ball State student groups, their faculty advisors, and the Ball State video production team. The sustainable outcome of this partnership break down the traditional confines of a scholarly journal and yielded a 133-page explanation of the students’ research, their biographies, and a description of the Indiana LSAMP program. Congratulations to the TAGA students and Dr. Lang at BSU on creating a video that inspires other LSAMP leaders to connect with a creative view of broadening participation!
