2021 LSMRCE Virtual Conference


The Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence conference, Empowering Diverse STEM Innovators, will be held virtually, October 22-24, 2021.

This conference offers students, faculty mentors, educational researchers, and program administrators a platform to exchange knowledge and to cultivate a community of practitioners and scholars in broadening the participation of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Call for Proposals

The conference will offer students, fellows, and professionals the opportunity to present their research or scholarly work. The types of calls include presenters and facilitators for the following:

Call for Moderators

Moderators receive complimentary conference registration!
The LSMRCE Conference will be delivered 100% virtually via Zoom meetings and webinars. LSMRCE is seeking session moderators for October 22, October 23, and October 24th.

Moderator role
  • Timekeeper
  • Welcome attendees on behalf of the LSMRCE conference organizers and leadership
  • Briefly introduce yourself and the session presenter(s)
  • Assist presenter in fielding questions from the audience
  • Remind attendees to complete the survey
  • Alert conference organizers of any technical issues
Ideal candidate
  • Dynamic rising seniors, grad students, post-docs, professionals, and LSAMP mentors/administrators
  • Comfortable using Zoom as a meeting attendee
  • Some familiarity using the Zoom participation tools (chat, Q&A, polls, emoticons, etc.)
  • Computer or laptop with the latest version of Zoom installed, headphones with a mic, and reliable internet connection
  • Bonus: Current or past LSAMP alumni or administrator
Time commitment
  • 30-minute meeting with your presenter to discuss session flow
  • Moderate at least 2, 1-hr sessions for the LSMRCE conference
  • Be available at least 15m prior to the start of each session to touch base with your presenter

Call for Poster Judges

Judges receive complimentary conference registration!
We are seeking approximately 50 judges to review and score more than 150 posters. Ideal candidates are fellows, post-docs, and faculty who are researchers in STEM or mentors of STEM students.

Session format:
  • ForagerOne Symposium will be used as the platform to host the virtual poster session.
  • Judging will be conducted asynchronously (offline) Friday, October 15th – Thursday, October 21st.
  • The live poster sessions will be held on Saturday, October 23rd. Presenters will be available to respond to questions posted in the discussion.
  • Each poster is judged three times for calibration.
Judges are asked to:
  • Attend a 30-minute training session the week of October 18th. Date/time TBD
  • Review and score approximately ten posters asynchronously. The judging window will open on Friday, October 15th at 12am ET and close on Thursday, October 21st at 11:59pm ET.
  • Participate in the live virtual poster sessions on Saturday, Oct 23rd. There will be two, 45-minute sessions, 11a ET – 11:45a ET and 2p-2:45p ET. Interact with the assigned presenters, provide feedback and encouragement.

In appreciation of your contribution, judges will receive complimentary conference registration, a letter for your CV, and acknowledgment on the conference website.
