COVID-19 RESOURCES FOR LSAMP COMMUNITIES

TOGETHER WE CAN

Welcome! This webpage offers resources to support the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) community during the COVID-19 crisis.

As mentors, we will identify strategies to continue to support our students remotely. As practitioners, we will develop and share resources to facilitate LSAMP BP efforts in a virtual space. And as colleagues, we will work together to help our students thrive even in these adverse conditions.

TIPS FOR ALLIANCES

  • Communicate with your LSAMP leadership, mentors, coordinators, and scholars on a regular basis.
    • Example: Message to the Mentors from the Leadership
    • Example: Message to the Scholars from the Mentors
    • Example: Message to the Scholars about Summer Programs
    • Example: Message to the Scholars about Disrupted Internships from UBuffalo
  • Assess (and re-assess on a regular basis) the needs of the LSAMP scholars. What do they need in order to continue to stay on track with their academic plan? What are they struggling with? What are their challenges?
  • Provide students strategies to address their immediate and emerging needs. This may require some back and forth with your NSF directorate and campus officials to determine what is allowed. We anticipate more information to be forthcoming from the NSF regarding allowable costs.
  • Plan alternate activities for virtual learning and mentoring for the summer months
    • Example: Record and post research presentation; have peer review and feedback.
    • Example: Have students practice lit reviews and their publication writing skills.
    • Example: Provide students data sets to practice data analysis and interpretation for research publications. See data set and virtual labs under Resources.
    • Example: Assign the students research and identify 2-3 different careers that interest them. Then host 'meet a ____' career pathways webinar series. Then have students write a reflection.
  • Leverage the expertise in the LSAMP community and the ‘online’ accessibility of all during this time. Use each other as 'subject matter experts' on research topics and careers for your students.
  • Engage and Encourage scholars to participate in an online community so they stay connected with the mentors and other scholars
